Umé Records is an ambient-focussed cassette label founded in 2018. It is inspired by New Age imagery, Japanese Environmental Music, and the search for new forms of spirituality rooted in specific experiences and contexts. It is also an exploration of the various meanings of 'ambient music'.
梅 (Umé) is the Japanese word for 'plum' or 'plum blossom'. This name was chosen to reflect both the musical inspiration behind the label, having come from Japanese ambient or Environmental Music pioneers like Satoshi Ashikawa and Hiroshi Yoshimura, and my own personal inspiration and connection with the country, the experiences of living and travelling in Japan having inspired much of my own subsequent musical direction. Beyond that, the name 梅 was chosen for its particular symbolism. Traditionally the plum blossom is seen as a symbol of coming spring, as it blossoms in late winter. In this way it can be seen as a symbol of beauty in the face of adversity, a symbol of perseverence. Thus the plum blossom can be seen as a metaphor for music, which so often is born out of mental or emotional struggle.
Each artist is given free reign to interpret the meaning of 'ambient' for themselves. Thus Umé Records will become a record of the myriad interpretations of 'ambient'.
